⚪️🔴 Eoghan Ruadh 3-11 - 1-18 Naomh Colum Cille ⚫️🔴⚫️

@ Páirc Iománaithe Dún Geanainn

Sunday 15/09/24

After an epic game that took extra time to decide and where every ball was fought for fiercely, our faoi 14 hurlers finally got over the line against a dogged Eoghan Ruadh team to make it through to the Tír Eoghain championship final this afternoon at the Hurling Field in Dungannon.

A good crowd had gathered in anticipation of another tight encounter in this the third installment of a trilogy of games between two very well coached sides whereby only a puck of a ball had separated them in the previous two meetings.

The cross field wind didn't seem to be favouring either side as referee Gerard Fox of Omagh threw the ball in to get the action underway and it was the Eoghan Ruadh lads that made hay out of the early autumnal sunshine as they fired in two quick fire goals to take a commanding six point lead with less than five minutes on the clock to rock the NCC lads back on their heels.

Fionn Daly responded with a well taken free to steady the Colum Cille ship to leave five in it before the Eoghan Ruadh lads took control again with two fine points of their own to lead 2-02 to 0-01 at around the ten minutes played mark.

The signs were ominous from a Black and Red point of view until the lads threw off their encumbering fetters and tore into the game to reel off six points in a row with Arny Abaravicius (0-1), Odhrán Coleman (0-1) and Fionn Daly (0-4) sharing the half dozen scores between them.

That left the score 2-02 to 0-07 in the Dungannon lads’ favour before a Daithí Devlin free for Eoghan Ruadh brought an exciting first half to a close as the two teams went in at the break.

Scór leath-ama:

Eoghan Ruadh 2-03
NCC 0-07

The young Cilles came out for the start of the second half in a determined mood and had two quick points on the board to bring us to within a point as Odhrán Coleman, with a neat point from play, and Fionn Daly, with another sweetly struck free set things up nicely at 2-04 to 0-09 in Eoghan Ruadh’s favour.

The game took another turn soon after as an Eoghan Ruadh attack finished in the back of the Cilles’ net with about ten minutes of the second half played, to leave us chasing the match once again.

As in the first half, the NCC lads dug deep and took control of proceedings from the fortieth minute and by the sixtieth had fired over a further six points to lead by two. Further scores from Fionn Daly, with three frees, Odhrán Coleman with two massive scores from play and midfielder Eoin Ferguson with a great long range point were almost enough to seal the victory but two late frees off the camán of young Dónal Devlin tied the game before the long whistle sounded.

Scór Deiridh (after normal time):

Eoghan Ruadh 3-06
NCC 0-15

The crowd was on edge as the two teams faced into the first ten minute period of extra time and it was the Dungannon lads who settled first as T Winters split the posts after a couple of minutes to sway the tide in his side's favour again.

Fionn Daly, who was having a very influential game, responded well when he hit a free from out on the left that evaded the Dungannon defence to nestle nicely in the roof of the net to put NCC back in the driving seat at 1-15 to 3-7. Himself and Dónal Devlin traded a further three points as the extra time half time whistle sounded.

Scór (after first half of extra time)

NCC 1-16
Eoghan Ruadh 3-09

The game was very much all to play for as the teams lined out for the second half of extra time. Dónal Devlin struck first from a free to tie the scores before Fionn Daly (pointed free) and young full forward Aodhán Donnelly, with a well worked point from play put the Black and Red two to the good as we headed into the home straight.

The young Dungannon lads weren’t finished yet though and threw everything they had at it in pursuit of a winning score. But for the stout hearted defending of the NCC rearguard, they might well have secured victory but had to settle for a late Dáithí Devlin point from play as their lot before Omagh clubman Gerard Fox sounded the long whistle much to the delight of the large Colum Cille support.

This match had everything that’s good about the game of hurling and for the third time this season a single score separated the two teams at the finish.

The young Cilles had heroic performances all over the field with full back Arijus Abaravicius proving a tower of strength from start to finish. He was ably assisted on the last line of defence by our two corner backs Tommy O’Neill and Fionn Rea with both lads providing excellent cover and some great counter attacking long range deliveries to keep the Eoghan Ruadh lads at bay. Pearse Donnelly in goals, despite a shaky start grew into the game and got steadier with his first touch and clearances as the game wore on.

Mícheál Kirwan was solid at six and continued his steady form of late as did Shane Mór at left half back and young Pauric Morgan on the opposite wing.

Our midfield pairing of Fionn Daly and Eoin Ferguson were excellent from the first whistle to the last with Fionn contributing 1-11 to the Black and Red cause and Eoin emptying the tank in pursuit of the dirty ball in the middle third throughout coupled with some fine fielding and a good score from play.

Odhrán Coleman led the attack brilliantly from centre half forward and his powerful, driving runs and excellent point taking were a constant source of delight for his team. Arinus Abaravicius was a bundle of energy on the half forward line, working tirelessly for the cause, winning countless frees and chipping in with a great point from play. Young Tommy Campbell at twelve was his usual reliable self and showed some neat flashes of skill and passing to bring his teammates into the game.

Our young full forward line of Conor Coney, Aodhán Donnelly and Peter Starrs gave performances beyond their years with their constant movement and tackling giving their Dungannon counterparts plenty to do.

The introductions of Kylan Preece, Peter Taggart, James Carron and Séan Gervin provided NCC with great energy with each lad giving their all in pursuit of victory.

This was a terrific game and result for NCC and on another day might have went the way of the young Eoghan Ruadh lads. We march on however and look forward to the challenge of Naomh Éanna An Ómaigh in the final in the coming weeks.
