Our Ógra NCC hurlers were honoured to be invited to take part in the Festival for Fíanna Hurling tournaments at Ballinascreen this morning and afternoon in memory of Fíanna Grace Harkin.
First up were our P6 and P7 hurlers who hurled well in Go Games style games with St Finbarrs, Ballerin and Ballinascreen of Derry and a strong Naomh Pádraig of North Antrim where our lads showed some great skill and courage.
Foireann NCC: Caiden O’Neill, Shea Hughes, Fergal Coyle, Daire Robinson, Ruairí McCabe, Michael McKeown, Martin O’Farrell, Cathal McCloy, Cathaoir O’Hagan, Aidan Mór Ó Néill, Orestas Kostrubas, Niall Quinn, Jude Quinn
Our Year 8 and Year 9 hurlers took to the field in the afternoon and were drawn in a group alongside Michael Davitt’s and Naomh Pádraig of Antrim and Ballinascreen and St Finbarrs of Derry.
The lads played mighty stuff and were unbeaten in each of our group games with two wins and two draws which left us top of the table and into the Cup semi final.
Group results:
⚔️NCC 2-01 Michael Davitt’s (Antrim) 0-06
Davitt’s played most of the hurling in our opening game and were 0-06 to 0-01 ahead as we entered into the final minute but a smash and grab from our lads who showed a never say die attitude garnered a 2-01 to 0-06 win with the goals coming off the camáin of Aodhan Donnelly, from a well struck free, and a well worked Conor Coney rocket at the death!
⚔️NCC 1-02 Naomh Pádraig 0-05
Next up for the Black ‘n’ Red was Naomh Pádraig of North Antrim in round 2.
The strong wind blowing from the Sperrins was at our backs in the opening half as we built up a healthy 1-02 to 0-01 lead by the short whistle with a Danny Hughes goal sandwiched in between two well struck points from Aodhan Donnelly and Lorcán Coleman.
It was backs to the wall stuff for most of the second half as the Naomh Pádraig boys threw everything at us but the lads held firm and claimed a share of the spoils as the score finished NCC 1-02 Naomh Pádraig 0-05
⚔️NCC 0-01 St Finbarr’s 0-01
In a cagey affair we played out a low scoring one point apiece draw with St Finbarr’s of South Derry as both teams failed to ignite for the most part with the solitary NCC point coming from a lovely Aodhan Donnelly free in the second half. Nonetheless, the result maintained our unbeaten record!
⚔️NCC 1-01 Ballinascreen (1) 0-02
In our final group game we squared up to the hosts Ballinascreen. A first half Danny Hughes goal in response to a ‘Screen point gave us a two point cushion at the turnaround.
A second half point from the strong running Lorcán Coleman put us 1-01 to 0-01 up with time almost up and a ‘Screen point in the dying embers wasn’t enough to prevent us topping the group table!
Cup Semi-final:
⚔️ NCC 3-02 Ballinascreen (2) 0-03
Our best performance of the day was kept for this semi-final as we faced the other Ballinascreen team.
In a free scoring display we marched on into the final with our goals coming from Danny Hughes, after great approach play from Conor Coney and two second half pile drivers from Lorcán Coleman. Further points from Peter Starrs and Aodhan Donnelly (free) ensured an 8 point victory and a final meeting with Naomh Pádraig.
Cup Final:
⚔️ NCC 0-00 Naomh Pádraig 0-03
The lads eventually ran out of steam in the final and a few missed scoring opportunities came against us in the end as three well struck Naomh Pádraig points seperated the teams in the end!
This was a great day’s hurling for our lads and each of them hurled their hearts out! We had an impressive unbeaten run up until the final and managed to not concede a single goal througout the tournament!
Míle buíochas to each of our hurlers, to the coaches, parents and guardians for providing transport and support and a special thanks to Mickey Mór for taking a car load of lads up the road at short notice!
Thanks also to the Ballinascreen club for hosting a great day’s hurling.
We wish PJ Coyle a speedy recovery after he sustained a bad arm injury during the tournament. Hopefully you’ll be back hurling again soon with us PJ!
